Getting Started with ChoreLoop: Set Up Your Household in Under 10 Minutes
A step-by-step guide to setting up ChoreLoop so your whole household knows what's due, who's doing it, and when.
ChoreLoop Team
You downloaded ChoreLoop because you're tired of being the only person who remembers to clean the bathroom. Good call. This guide walks you through everything you need to do after signing up so your household is organized, everyone has their assignments, and you can stop carrying the mental load alone.
The whole setup takes about 10 minutes. By the end, you'll have recurring chores on a schedule, tasks assigned to specific people, and notifications set up so nobody can say "I didn't know it was my turn."
Step 1: Create Your Account
Open ChoreLoop and tap Create Account. You'll need a name, email, and password. That's it — no phone number, no social login hoops.
Once you're in, ChoreLoop asks you to either create a new household or join an existing one. If you're the first person setting things up, tap Create New Household.
Step 2: Create Your Household
Give your household a name — something like "The Garcia Family" or "Apartment 4B." ChoreLoop auto-detects your timezone from your phone, so due dates and notifications always line up with your actual day.
Tap Create Household and you're dropped straight into your Home dashboard.
If someone in your house already set things up, they can share an invite code with you (it looks like ABC-DEF-GHI). Tap Join with Code on the household screen, enter the code, and you're in.
Step 3: Add Your Household Members
Before you start adding chores, get everyone into the household. Head to Settings > Manage Members. You have two options:
Invite by Email
If your partner, roommate, or older kid has their own phone, enter their email and tap Send Invitation. They'll get an email with a link to create their ChoreLoop account and join your household. Once they're in, they can see everything — tasks, chores, lists — and complete their own assignments.
Add a Managed Member
For younger kids or anyone who won't have their own account, tap Add Managed and type their name. Managed members show up in the assignee list so you can assign chores to them, but they don't need a login. You track their tasks for them.
A household with 2-4 members is the sweet spot, but the free plan supports up to 4 and premium is unlimited.
Step 4: Add Your First Chores (The Fast Way)
Here's where ChoreLoop saves you the most time. Instead of sitting down and trying to remember every single chore your house needs, use Cleaning Kits — pre-built bundles of chores organized by room.
Go to the Chores tab and tap the menu icon (three dots) in the top right, then tap Bundles.
You'll see categories like Kitchen, Bathroom, Living Room, Bedroom, Outdoor, and Pets. Tap into any category and you'll find ready-made kits. Each kit lets you choose an activity level:
- Low — the essentials (great for apartments or minimal-maintenance spaces)
- Medium — a solid weekly routine for most households
- High — thorough coverage for larger homes or people who want everything tracked
Pick a kit, select your activity level, and add it. All the chores from that kit — with recurrence schedules already set — land in your Chores tab instantly.
Start with 2-3 kits for your most-used rooms. You can always add more later. Most households start with Kitchen + Bathroom and go from there.
Step 5: Set Default Assignees
Now that you have chores, assign them. Tap any chore in the Chores tab to open it, then set the Default Assignee. This is the person who's responsible for that chore every time it comes up.
When ChoreLoop generates a new task from that chore (say, "Clean the kitchen sink" every Monday), it automatically assigns it to whichever member you picked. No manual delegation every week.
A few approaches that work well:
- Split by room: One person owns Kitchen, another owns Bathroom
- Split by type: One person does all the vacuuming, another handles trash and recycling
- Rotate: Leave some chores unassigned and take turns claiming them each week
You can also bulk-assign an entire category at once. On the Chores tab, tap the three-dot menu next to any category header and choose Assign all to quickly set one person as the default for every chore in that group.
Step 6: Create a One-Off Task (When You Need It)
Not everything is a recurring chore. Maybe you need to buy a new shower curtain or call the plumber. For one-time things, go to the Tasks tab, tap the menu, and select Add task.
Give it a title, set a due date, optionally assign it to someone, and you're done. One-off tasks show up in your schedule alongside your recurring chore tasks, so everything lives in one place.
Step 7: Set Up a Shared List
Tap the Lists tab and create your first list. Popular starting points:
- Grocery List — Add items as you run out during the week. Check them off as you shop. Next week, uncheck everything you've used up and your list is ready again.
- Packing List — Build it once for camping, beach trips, or travel. Check items off as you pack. Before your next trip, tap Uncheck All and the whole list resets.
- Weekend Reset — A quick checklist for your Saturday routine: change sheets, wipe counters, take out recycling.
Lists are shared across the whole household, so anyone can add to the grocery list when they notice you're out of something. No more texting "Can you grab milk?" — it's already on the list.
You can add items one at a time or paste a whole batch at once (one item per line) using the bulk add feature.
Step 8: Turn On Notifications
This is the step that makes everything actually work. Without notifications, ChoreLoop is just a list. With them, it's a system that holds everyone accountable.
Go to Settings > Notifications. ChoreLoop will ask for permission to send push notifications. Say yes. Then configure when you want daily reminders — most people pick the morning so they see what's due for the day, or the evening as a heads-up for tomorrow.
Once notifications are on, every household member gets a reminder about their assigned tasks. No more "I forgot" or "I didn't see it." The app tells them directly.
Step 9: Check Your Home Dashboard
Your Home tab is your daily command center. Every time you open ChoreLoop, you'll see:
- Three stat cards at the top: how many tasks are done today, how many are pending, and how many are overdue
- Today's Schedule: everything due today, with the assignee and category for each task
- Overdue tasks: anything that slipped through the cracks (these show up in red so they're hard to ignore)
- Coming Up: what's on the schedule for tomorrow and the rest of the week
When you're ready to knock something out, tap a task to open it and hit Mark Complete. You can optionally add a note ("Used the new vacuum") or say who actually did it.
If something comes up and you can't get to a task today, tap Reschedule to push it to another day, or Skip This Time if it genuinely doesn't need doing this cycle.
Step 10: Watch the Leaderboard
After a week of using ChoreLoop, head to the Activity tab and tap Stats. You'll see the household leaderboard — ranked by effort points, not just task count.
ChoreLoop weights each chore by effort (1-5 points), so scrubbing the oven counts for more than wiping a counter. The leaderboard shows who's actually pulling their weight, and it updates by week, month, or year.
This isn't about competition (well, maybe a little). It's about visibility. When everyone can see the numbers, the "I do everything around here" argument gets replaced with actual data.
Bonus: Use the AI Assistant
If you're on the Premium plan, you've got access to the AI Assistant. Tap the robot icon on your Home screen to open it.
The assistant can handle bulk operations through conversation. A few things people use it for:
- "Create a list of chores I need to maintain my travel trailer"
- "Add a weekly chore to vacuum every room in my house"
- "Make me a packing checklist for a camping trip"
Instead of tapping through forms, just tell the assistant what you need in plain language and it takes care of the rest. It's especially handy when you're setting up a new space or doing a big seasonal refresh.
You're All Set
That's it. Your household now has:
- A shared chore schedule with recurring tasks on autopilot
- Every member assigned to specific chores
- Notifications keeping everyone in the loop
- Shared lists for groceries, packing, or anything else
- A leaderboard tracking who's doing what
The whole point of ChoreLoop is to take the invisible work of managing a household and make it visible. Once everyone can see what needs doing — and who's supposed to do it — the arguments stop and the chores actually get done.
If you have questions or want to get the most out of the app, the AI Assistant (Premium) is always there to help, or you can browse our other guides on the blog for tips on fair chore distribution, seasonal maintenance schedules, and more.
